Washington - Afaq News - An investigation conducted by CNN has revealed an indirect financial connection between Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of U.S. President Donald Trump and his envoy to the Middle East, and Israeli companies linked to the Israeli military. This comes at a time when Kushner is playing a pivotal role in negotiations aimed at ending the war in Gaza, while he has supported the war by selling arms to the Israeli army.
According to the investigation, Kushner's investment firm, Affinity Partners, holds the largest stake in the Israeli Phoenix Financial group, at 7.4%, a stake valued at over one billion dollars as of last July.
Phoenix invests hundreds of millions of dollars in Elbit Systems, one of the largest Israeli military industries, in addition to stakes in other companies that supply the Israeli army with military equipment and services, according to financial records tracked by CNN.
These investments gain particular significance given Kushner's role in the Gaza file; he has participated in negotiations with Israeli and Palestinian officials, meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and leaders from Hamas as part of the Trump administration's efforts to revive a ceasefire plan and end the war.
The investigation indicates that Kushner's company doubled its stake in Phoenix over the past year, while selling about a quarter of its stake in July, achieving a return of more than five times the original investment, while still retaining its position as the largest shareholder in the Israeli group.
However, the investigation raises questions about potential conflicts of interest, especially since Kushner serves as an unofficial and volunteer envoy for the Trump administration, rather than as a traditional government employee subject to the same rules regarding financial disclosure and conflicts of interest.
Thus, Kushner appears in a position that combines negotiating to end the war in Gaza on one hand, and owning a stake in an investment firm that invests in companies linked to the Israeli military effort on the other hand, which has led the investigation to raise questions about the boundaries between his diplomatic role and his private investment interests.
