- King Charles III of Britain announced that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan, "will remain non-working members of the royal family and will not undertake any official duties on behalf of the Crown," following their return to the United Kingdom after six years spent in the United States. In a message sent on behalf of the King on Monday, the Lord Chamberlain, head of the royal household, stated that "it is known that the Duke and Duchess stepped back in January 2020 from performing their representative duties on behalf of the King, and they are no longer working members of the royal family."
The senior palace official added in the message, which was directed to senior officials in the government and military, as well as the Duke's team, that this situation "will continue to be fully respected," and continued: "There is no change in the current status of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex." Sources for Afaaq News reported that the message was issued to clarify the status of the Sussex family after several requests for clarification, as the new period of the royal family's agenda begins.
Prince Harry and Meghan left the United Kingdom for North America in 2020 after stepping back from their royal duties, and the subsequent years have seen a public rift with the royal family. Despite this troubled family history, the couple returned to the country late last month, accompanied by their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, who are enrolled in British schools.
According to the message, all charitable work undertaken by Harry and Meghan "is a personal matter for them and is done in their private capacity," adding: "In short, their status is similar to that of ordinary citizens with business and charitable interests." It continued that all correspondence and administrative inquiries related to the couple should be sent directly to their office, "which will continue to operate independently of the royal household."
Afaaq News reached out to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for comment.
