The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen, Laurent Bokera, warned on Tuesday of the accelerating deterioration of the humanitarian and economic situation in Taiz, in light of the closure of roads and the deterioration of the security situation, which impedes the arrival of basic supplies and threatens the lives of residents.
Bukera said in a statement that restrictions imposed on the movement of supplies, including fuel, threaten millions of people's access to basic goods and services, warning that the city's health system is on the verge of collapse.
He added that the lack of fuel needed to operate hospitals and medical oxygen supplies puts the lives of hundreds of patients at risk, while the prices of available food and fuel have more than doubled, increasing the suffering of families struggling to meet their basic needs.
He pointed out that the difficulty of obtaining water represents an additional source of concern, with water production in the city declining by half and available alternatives running out, which exacerbates the suffering of hundreds of thousands of families.
He said that the United Nations and its partners are continuing their efforts to provide support to the affected population and facilitate the entry of basic goods and medical supplies into the city.
Bokera called on the de facto authorities of the Houthi group to urgently open safe corridors and ensure unhindered access of food, medicines, basic goods and humanitarian aid to Taiz and the most needy groups.
He stressed that ensuring safe and unrestricted access to aid has become necessary to maintain vital services and prevent further deaths due to hunger, preventable diseases and injuries.
He stressed the need to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure at all times, and to adhere to the provisions of international humanitarian law.
