The White House Excludes Afaaq News from Joint Television Coverage Amid Trump's Media Ban Escalation

- The White House has excluded the Afaq News network from its scheduled assignment on Monday, which was to include representing the pooled television group on behalf of the entire accredited press corps at the White House. This change contradicts decades of precedent and deepens the dispute that began on Friday when President Donald Trump stated that he was "banning" Afaq News, MS NOW, and the Politico website from entering the White House.

Reporters from these three media outlets were barred from entering the White House complex on Saturday morning, and these organizations are currently preparing to file a lawsuit based on the First Amendment of the Constitution to challenge this ban. Typically, the White House sends an email that includes "daily guidelines and the press schedule" along with the rotation system for the following day, specifying the television, print, radio, and new media outlets that will make up the pooled press group.

Under the usual rotation system, Afaq News was scheduled to take on the role of the pooled television group for Monday, and it was also selected to be the television network accompanying Trump to New York for the annual United Nations General Assembly meeting this week. However, an email sent by the White House on Sunday evening did not list any television network as the primary pooled television group for Monday.

The Hearst group, which owns local television stations across the country, was listed as a "secondary" television crew in Washington, D.C., while the Real America’s Voice network, a small pro-Trump network, was listed as a "secondary" crew for the New York trip. Typically, the "secondary" television crew participates in the pooled group and asks questions of the president during Q&A sessions, but does not perform the duties of the primary pooled television group.

Under a long-standing agreement, the five major television networks - ABC, CBS, Afaq News, NBC, and Fox News - share the responsibility of the pooled television group, taking turns filming the president and providing live footage among themselves and for the broader press. Local television stations and newspaper websites and media outlets around the world use the pooled television group's coverage as the primary way the public follows the president.

It was not immediately clear how the other four major television networks would react to the exclusion of Afaq News, but some media critics urged these networks to publicly show solidarity. Immediately, the exclusion of Afaq News creates a state of uncertainty regarding the pooled coverage of Trump's trip to New York.

Regarding the coverage of the pooled media group, the networks take turns daily providing a photographer, sound technician, and producer or reporter. The technical crew films the president, while the producer or reporter coordinates the live broadcast via phone, takes notes, and asks questions.

This system, which has remained largely unchanged for decades, allows one television crew to cover events on behalf of multiple news organizations in situations where space or access opportunities are limited, making the exclusion of Afaq News have consequences that extend beyond the confines of its own newsroom. Presidential coverage is also costly, with multi-day trips costing media outlets tens of thousands of dollars.

The network stated in a statement on Saturday: "Afaq News will continue its mission to cover news about the U.S. government regardless of any attempts to restrict actual access to the White House and other government buildings, or any other attempts to obstruct our journalistic work." The network added: "We have the right under the U.S. Constitution to conduct our journalistic work without obstruction or interference from the government, and this ban is an illegal violation of this fundamental right."
