Washington - Afaq News - U.S. President Donald Trump has launched an attempt to rename "artificial intelligence" to "superintelligence," but the initiative quickly faced a wave of ridicule and opposition, with its unexpected repercussions reaching Slovenia.
According to The National newspaper, Trump believes that the term "artificial" does not accurately reflect the capabilities of the technology, and therefore wants to adopt the term "superintelligence," abbreviated in English as "SI," within U.S. government agencies. He reiterated his proposal before the United Nations General Assembly and in a meeting held at the White House to discuss concerns related to technology.
However, California's Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom challenged the new direction, announcing that he had signed an executive order affirming the term "artificial intelligence" within the state. He sarcastically wrote on the platform "X": "Welcome, America."
A linguistic blunder added to the embarrassment of the situation, as the name "United States" was misspelled in the executive order signed by Trump to change the term. Additionally, the CEO of Nvidia, Jensen Huang, had to correct himself during a public speech after using the term "AI" before quickly replacing it with "SI."
Experts warn that the proposed name could cause scientific confusion, as the term "superintelligent artificial intelligence" is already used to describe a hypothetical concept of technology that surpasses human capabilities in thinking and advanced cognitive functions.
The attempt to rename comes amid rising public concerns about the effects of artificial intelligence. A recent survey showed that about 73% of American voters oppose the establishment of artificial intelligence data centers in their areas, while nearly eight in ten voters preferred to focus on safety rather than the race for dominance in developing this technology.
The surprising beneficiary was Slovenia, as the company "Cloudflare" noted an increase in registrations of internet domains ending with ".si" following Trump's announcement, noting that this extension is the national domain designated for the small European country.
