US President Donald Trump on Tuesday avoided announcing a clear position regarding his support for his vice president, J.D. Vance, to run in the 2028 presidential elections, after Vance said on Monday that he believed Trump would support him if he decided to run.
“He's a very talented person, a very good person,” Trump said, speaking alongside Vance in the Oval Office, when asked about a possible endorsement.
The US President added, turning to his vice president: “I don’t think we talked about this matter before.”
"No, sir. I said that too," Vance responded.
Trump commented: "Who would believe that? I'm not talking to him about this, and he's not talking to me about it. It's still early."
He added: "We have to get through the midterm elections first, and then we will see how things go."
Vance had said, in an interview with the “2Way” platform on Monday, that he believed that Trump would support him if he decided to run in the 2028 presidential race. The Vice President explained: “I think I would get his support, but I also think there is a reason to let the candidates run their own race.”
He added that the president's support could be very decisive, which might prompt Trump to let the competition take its course instead of deciding his position in advance.
"You can certainly envision a scenario in which the president says, 'We need to let this race run its course, and not prejudge the outcome,'" Vance said.
He also noted that media scrutiny, pressure and political issues are factors that may affect the course of the competition, adding that he does not know for certain how things will develop.
Vance confirmed that he had not yet discussed with Trump the possibility of his candidacy for the presidency, and said: “If I run, I think the president will support me, but I have not spoken to him about that yet.”
Although Vance repeatedly asserts that his current priority is to help Republicans maintain their majority in Congress during the midterm elections, his name is constantly being raised as one of the most prominent potential candidates for the Republican Party nomination in the 2028 presidential elections.
