US President Donald Trump did not rule out the possibility of Katie Zacharias leaving the position of White House spokeswoman, a few days after assuming the job, revealing that he advised her to reconsider continuing, against the backdrop of what he described as harsh and unfair treatment by the media.
Trump said, on Friday, while speaking to reporters before heading to an election rally in the state of Georgia, that he spoke with Zacharias minutes before his statements, and advised her to think about the suitability of the position for her.
He added: "I told her: 'If I were you, I would reconsider. Is this right for you, Katie? Honestly, you don't need this.'"
Trump explained that Zacharias told him that the task was much more difficult than she expected, to which he responded, saying: “Welcome to Trump World,” indicating that he would leave her to make the final decision about her future in office.
He continued: "She is a nice person, and I watched her for years on TV, but the media treated her very harshly. I just want her to be happy," adding that he assured her that she did not have to continue working if she did not want to.
Trump referred to her appearances on television programs, including “Hunty” and “Fox & Friends,” considering that the media coverage she was subjected to was harsh from the beginning of her mission.
A short press conference and criticism of her performance
Trump's comments came shortly after the appointment of Zacharias, a former conservative commentator who worked for Trump Media and the Truth Social platform, and also spent a short stint at the Department of Homeland Security.
Zacharias assumed the position on October 9, succeeding Caroline Levitt, who left her position last August.
She began her official duties days later, before holding her first press conference on October 13, which lasted about 14 minutes, during which she received questions from a limited number of journalists.
The conference witnessed some moments that sparked comments, including a verbal error in which she used the word “president” before correcting it to “my husband,” in addition to criticism that addressed her performance and her professional experience in dealing with the press from within the White House.
The position of White House spokesman is considered one of the most sensitive positions in the US administration, as it requires defending the president's policies, responding to journalists' questions, and dealing with daily media and political pressures.
Are you moving to another position?
Trump's statements put Zacharia's future in office into question, especially since they came a few days after she assumed responsibility, and at a time when the president is preparing to intensify his electoral activity before the midterm congressional elections.
Trump hinted, in subsequent posts on the X platform, that he would speak to her again after his return, while raising the possibility of her moving to another job within the White House instead of continuing as an official spokeswoman.
However, there has not yet been an official announcement confirming Zacharia's resignation or her transfer to another position, nor has she announced a final position regarding her continuation in her mission.
