The Serengeti Plains of Tanzania are one of the most spectacular wildlife destinations on Earth. In 2024, Italian photographer Enrico Pescantini visited it to document the famous Great Migration scenes of animals that captivate safari enthusiasts around the world.
But amid those exceptional moments, two ostriches succeeded in “stealing the entire spotlight,” as he described it. During one of his long waits to capture dramatic wildlife scenes, two ostriches lined up perfectly in front of his lens, creating a striking optical illusion: they appeared to be a single ostrich with a strangely long neck.
In an interview with the Ofoq News website in Arabic, the Italian photographer explained the reality of the scene, saying: “In fact, the picture shows two different ostriches, one of them tilts its long neck towards the grass on the left side, while the other stands upright on the right side with its head raised.” The spontaneous moment reminded him of the magic of wildlife. “Sometimes the animals do the work for you,” he said.
All you have to do is be present and press the photo button.” Pescantini was with a group of his friends during the safari trip when he took the photo, which added to the atmosphere of fun and laughter, as he stressed: “It is impossible not to smile when you see something like this.”
The photo received widespread attention among Internet pioneers, and it was also nominated in the wildlife comedy photography competition. For the Italian photographer, the photo was a reminder that wildlife photography doesn't always have to be serious or dramatic, as sometimes, "joy is the strongest message."
The Italian photographer hopes the photo will make people feel closer to the natural world. “If someone sees this photo and feels a moment of joy, and that joy includes a greater concern for protecting these habitats and the animals that live in them, then the photo has achieved something truly meaningful,” he said.
