On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump proposed changing the name of the Strait of Hormuz to the “Trump Strait,” after he again said that the vital waterway was under the control of the United States of America. Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform: “Now that the Strait of Hormuz is under the control of the United States of America, should we change its name to the Trump Strait?”
This comes in the wake of US strikes on Iran last night, in a military escalation that the region has not witnessed for about a month. The United States stated that these strikes came in response to recent attack attempts targeting commercial shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz and American forces deployed in the region.
Iran vowed to respond by targeting American interests and bases in the region, and announced that it had targeted sites in both Jordan and Bahrain. Trump has always said that the United States controls the Strait of Hormuz and that it is open to navigation, but Iran says that the Strait is closed and that ships that do not adhere to Tehran’s instructions will be at risk.
