The World Food Programme said today, Friday, that hunger rates in Yemen are increasing at an alarming pace, with the number of people unable to meet their food needs reaching a record level.
Matthew Hollingworth, the Assistant Executive Director for Operations at the programme, stated that a record number of people in areas controlled by the Yemeni government, which the programme can access, have become unable to meet their food needs within a few weeks, and three out of four families may have to reduce the number of their meals.
The total population in the areas controlled by the government is estimated to be around 10 million people.
Hollingworth told reporters in Geneva via video link from Rome, "The implications of the latest security escalation could be catastrophic in every sense for food security."
Yemen is currently witnessing an escalation in fighting that is the most intense since the UN-brokered truce that largely halted attacks in 2022. The resurgence of conflict has already caused the displacement of tens of thousands.
