The leader of the Democrats in the US House of Representatives, Hakeem Jeffries, told the Ofoq News network that ending the war in Iran will be one of the most prominent urgent goals of the Democratic Party, within a broad agenda to address the crisis of affordability of living in 2027. Jeffries is expected to assume the presidency of the House of Representatives next January after the Democratic Party topped the political scene in Congress and legislative councils across the country in Tuesday’s elections.
“There was no justification for entering into this war, and we must get out of it immediately,” Jeffries told Ofoq News anchor Wolf Blitzer, in response to a question about his most urgent priorities when Democrats officially regain control of the House of Representatives next year. Jeffries, who leads a Democratic bloc that recently regained its momentum in the House of Representatives, indicated that the high cost of living was one of the strongest factors that pushed his party to victory in Tuesday’s elections, stressing that this issue will remain his primary focus during the coming year.
While some members of his party, such as Representative Robert Garcia, who is scheduled to chair the House Oversight Committee soon, announced broad plans to summon officials in the administration of US President Donald Trump to testify under oath next year, Jeffries seemed more reserved about how the party will deal with these investigations and interrogations. In response to Garcia's comments on Tuesday evening, in which he warned Trump administration officials to "get lawyers," Jeffries said: "We campaigned on the basis of addressing the affordability crisis, and we won decisively, and we now have the responsibility to govern and work to address this crisis."
Jeffries also touched on diversity within the Democratic bloc in the House of Representatives next year, with newly elected democratic socialists alongside Democrats from rural areas who embrace more moderate approaches to governance. “What unites us all is our shared commitment to working hard to address the affordability crisis,” Jeffries said.
