Scenes are documented for the first time showing the forces of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad withdrawing from their positions as opposition factions advance.
Members of the former regime's forces left their weapons in front of the advance of the Military Operations Administration forces on the Ithriya-Khanaser road and fled from their positions in December 2024.
The Ithriya-Khanaser road is a vital land route in Syria, connecting the Ithriya area in the eastern countryside of Hama to the town of Khanaser located in the southeastern countryside of Aleppo. This road gained wide fame during the years of war as it was the only land supply artery leading to the city of Aleppo.
It is noted that on December 8, 2024, the 'Military Operations Administration forces' advanced towards the capital, Damascus, while Assad and his family fled to Moscow, where they were granted humanitarian asylum. His brother Maher al-Assad also fled to Russia along with some of his senior leaders.
Since then, the new Syrian authorities have been focused on rebuilding the country and pursuing remnants of the regime. The judiciary has issued a death sentence for Bashar and Maher al-Assad for their involvement in war crimes against the Syrian people.
