- Susie Wiles, White House chief of staff, is leaving her position, and will be succeeded by Stephen Miller, a longtime aide to US President Donald Trump. Trump said that Wiles would move to work on his political team, noting that she "did an outstanding job."
The president explained that this change, which comes three days after Republicans suffered heavy losses in the midterm elections, will take effect on Monday. By appointing Miller to the highest administrative position within the West Wing of the White House, Trump is putting at the forefront the controversial figure who shaped his hard-line immigration agenda.
Miller, who currently holds the position of Deputy Chief of Staff at the White House, has expanded the scope of his responsibilities over the past year to include broad sectors of domestic policy, and has adopted an expansive vision of the powers of the executive branch. Miller has been working with Trump since his first presidential campaign, which launched in 2015.
Wiles said, in a statement she previously posted on the “X” platform, Twitter, that working with Trump was “the honor of a lifetime,” expressing her pride in participating in what they achieved together. “My role may change, but my commitment to the president and his message will never change,” she added.
Wiles, a veteran of Florida Republican Party politics, was one of the masterminds of the president's political strategy. Before becoming the first woman to serve as White House chief of staff, Wiles served as Trump's 2024 campaign manager.
Wiles recently announced the completion of her treatment for breast cancer.
