According to several media outlets on Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump intends to appoint current U.S. intelligence director Jay Clayton as the government's reference point for artificial intelligence affairs.
Trump stated earlier this week that he would soon announce the name of the person he has chosen to take over the file following David Sachs, who left his position at the end of March.
CBS television reported that Trump may keep Jay Clayton in his current position, with this new mandate added to his powers.
Clayton, in his sixties, took over as Director of National Intelligence (DNI) shortly after the Senate approved his appointment in late July. Before joining the Trump administration, he served as the federal prosecutor in Manhattan since April 2025.
Clayton also chaired the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission from 2017 to 2020, which oversees financial markets, and was appointed to this position by Trump.
Clayton, who hails from Virginia, has worked as a business lawyer for over two decades, particularly in the financial sector.
Clayton has no experience in the technology sector, unlike David Sachs, the investor and entrepreneur in Silicon Valley.
The anticipated appointment of a new authority in the field of artificial intelligence comes at a time when this issue has gained increasing importance in recent months, especially due to rising concerns about the ability of companies innovating tools for this technology to control it.
Senior officials from artificial intelligence companies pledged on Tuesday to take a series of measures to enhance internal oversight and manage AI risks, but without any external regulation opposed by Trump.
